About Acrylic Sheets

Acrylic (polymethyl methacrylate, or PMMA) is a lightweight thermoplastic that combines optical clarity with ease of fabrication. It is approximately half the weight of glass at equivalent thickness, transmits up to 92% of visible light, and can be cut, laser-engraved, routed, drilled, and thermoformed with standard shop tooling. These properties have made it the default material for signage faces, retail displays, protective glazing, and architectural elements across Canada.

FIDAR System sources its cast acrylic from Hsin Hwa Chemical (HHC) of Taiwan, one of Asia's leading cast acrylic manufacturers. As Canada's exclusive HHC distributor, we offer the full HHC colour palette with consistent batch-to-batch colour matching - which matters when fabricators need to reorder materials for multi-unit or multi-site projects.

Cast vs. Extruded Acrylic

All HHC acrylic in our range is manufactured using the cell-cast process, which produces tighter thickness tolerances (±0.4mm), better surface hardness, and superior laser engraving results compared to extruded acrylic. We also stock extruded PMMA in clear, grey, and sparkling variants for cost-sensitive applications where the strict tolerances of cast acrylic are not required.

Acrylic Colour Range

The FIDAR System acrylic range covers every colour category a B2B fabricator could require: optical-grade clear (cast and extruded), fully opaque whites (6 colour codes), blacks and greys (6 colour codes including day/night), 20+ vibrant colour codes across seven colour families, 9 new soft pastel matte colours, mirror variants in gold, silver, rose gold, brown, and brightgrey, and the P95 frosted/privacy grade. Each colour code is a distinct formulation - not a paint or film applied over a base sheet.

Applications by Industry

The Canadian sign and display industry is the largest consumer of acrylic sheets, using them for sign faces, channel letter components, light box faces, and display structures. Commercial interior contractors specify acrylic for sneeze guards, partition inserts, and architectural glazing. Retail display fabricators use it for risers, cases, and brand-colour fixtures. Trophy and awards companies rely on cast clear and black acrylic for engraved plaques and recognition products. Aquarium builders and hobbyists use thick-gauge clear acrylic for tank panels. Makers and custom fabricators use coloured and extruded acrylic for creative projects.

Applications & Use Cases

Signage & Graphics

LED & Backlit Signage

White and clear acrylic are the primary face materials for LED-backlit cabinet signs, light boxes, and illuminated channel letter signs. The combination of light transmission and opacity control across colour codes allows fabricators to tune the look of a lit sign precisely.

Retail

Retail Display & Visual Merchandising

Acrylic is the standard material for retail display risers, cases, product pedestals, and brand-colour fixtures. The clarity, variety of colours, and ease of fabrication make it the go-to material for display shops across Canada.

Awards & Promotions

Laser Engraving & Awards

Cast acrylic - particularly clear and black - is the preferred substrate for laser-engraved awards, plaques, trophies, and recognition products. The engraved area produces a clean, high-contrast frosted result.

Commercial Interiors

Protective Glazing & Barriers

Acrylic is widely used for sneeze guards, counter barriers, partition inserts, and protective glazing in offices, pharmacies, restaurants, and retail environments.

Aquatics

Custom Aquariums & Water Features

Thick-gauge cast clear acrylic (9mm–25mm) is used by custom aquarium fabricators for tank panels, observation windows, and water feature enclosures.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between acrylic and plexiglass?

Acrylic and plexiglass refer to the same material - polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). 'Plexiglass' or 'Plexiglas' is a brand name owned by Evonik Industries, but the term is widely used generically for all clear acrylic sheet products. FIDAR System's acrylic is HHC cast PMMA - the same material type as Plexiglas, made by a different manufacturer.

What acrylic thicknesses does FIDAR System stock?

FIDAR System stocks cast clear acrylic from 1mm to 25mm (11 thicknesses), white and black acrylic in common thicknesses from 2.8mm to 18mm, coloured acrylic in 2.8mm, 4.3mm, and 5.5mm, extruded clear acrylic from 2mm to 6mm, and P95 frosted in 2.8mm, 4.3mm, and 5.5mm. The available thicknesses vary by colour code.

Does FIDAR System offer cut-to-size acrylic?

Yes. FIDAR System offers cut-to-size service for acrylic sheets. Standard cut sizes are available at listed prices; custom dimensions are available - contact us for a quote.

How is HHC acrylic different from other brands?

Hsin Hwa Chemical (HHC) is a Taiwanese manufacturer with decades of experience in cast acrylic production. As Canada's exclusive HHC distributor, FIDAR System offers batch-consistent colour codes with reliable reorder availability - important for fabricators who need to match materials across multiple production runs.

Can acrylic be used outdoors in Canada?

Standard cast acrylic has moderate UV resistance and is used in outdoor signage applications. For long-term outdoor exposure in direct Canadian sunlight, a UV-protective coating or UV-stabilized acrylic variant is recommended to prevent yellowing over time.
