Closed-cell rigid PVC foam board (also sold as Foamex or foam PVC) is the workhorse substrate of the Canadian sign industry - lightweight at roughly 0.55 g/cm³, moisture-resistant, dimensionally stable, and print-ready without priming. Sign shops use it for flat-cut panels, exhibitors for booth walls, and contractors for wet-area panelling where wood-based sheets would degrade.
FIDAR System stocks white PVC in six thicknesses (3mm to 24mm) and black PVC in four (3mm to 18mm), all on 4×8 ft sheets, at our North York warehouse. The black sheets are through-body black, not a coated face - the entire cross-section is black, so routed edges match the surface.
The guides in this category cover material selection, installation, fabrication, and how PVC compares to acrylic and ACM for sign-making.
What thickness of PVC foam board is standard for signs?
6mm white PVC is the standard flat-cut sign substrate in Canadian sign shops - rigid enough for wall-mounted panels, light enough to install with tape or standoffs. 3mm is used where weight and profile matter most; 10mm and up serve dimensional letters and structural display components.
Can PVC foam board be laser cut?
It can, but most fabricators avoid it. Laser cutting PVC releases chlorine gas (HCl), which corrodes laser optics and is harmful without proper fume extraction. A CNC router with an O-flute bit or a circular saw produces clean edges without the hazard. If laser processing is your primary method, acrylic is the safer substrate.
Is PVC foam board waterproof?
The closed-cell structure makes rigid PVC foam highly moisture-resistant - it does not absorb water the way wood-based panels do, which is why it is used for bathroom panelling, shower surrounds, and wet-area cladding. For long outdoor exposure in direct sun, UV-protective laminates or inks are recommended to prevent surface yellowing.
What is the difference between white and black PVC sheets?
Same closed-cell material, same density - only the colour differs. White is the high-volume choice for printed signage and displays. Black is through-body coloured (not coated), used for dark sign panels and display backings where routed edges must match the face without paint or vinyl.
