Which plastic sheets can be laser cut safely?
Cast acrylic is the best laser substrate - it cuts cleanly with a flame-polished edge and engraves with high contrast. Extruded acrylic cuts acceptably with slightly lower edge quality. PVC should not be laser cut without serious fume extraction (it releases corrosive HCl gas), polycarbonate tends to yellow and discolour at the cut edge, and ACM cannot be laser cut at all because the aluminum faces reflect the beam.
How do I cut polycarbonate sheets?
Use a circular saw with an 80-tooth carbide blade or a jigsaw with a fine-tooth blade, feeding at a steady moderate rate. Score-and-snap does not work on polycarbonate - the material is too flexible to fracture at a score line. Leave the protective masking on during cutting, and drill fastener holes 1-2mm oversize to allow for thermal expansion.
