ACM (aluminum composite material) panels - two thin aluminum face sheets bonded to a polyethylene core - are the standard material for exterior building cladding, premium sign substrates, and retail storefront fascias across Canada. A 3mm ACM panel weighs about 5.5 kg/m², routs and folds cleanly with a V-groove, and carries a painted aluminum face engineered for Canadian weather.
FIDAR System stocks 3mm ACM in eight face/back colour combinations on 4×8 ft sheets, alongside HEXABEN Clear honeycomb composite panels for large-format structural and backlit applications, and flexible printable magnetic rolls for vehicle graphics - all at our North York, Ontario warehouse.
The guides in this category cover panel specification, fabrication, colour and finish selection, and how ACM compares to PVC and acrylic for signage.
What is an ACM panel made of?
An ACM panel is a sandwich of two thin aluminum face sheets (0.2mm or 0.3mm at FIDAR System) bonded to a solid polyethylene core, for a total thickness of 3mm. The result is a panel far more rigid and lighter than solid aluminum of equivalent stiffness, with a factory-painted face available in matte, gloss, metallic, mirror, and brushed finishes.
Can ACM panels be laser cut?
No. The aluminum faces reflect the CO2 laser beam and can damage laser optics. ACM is fabricated with a CNC router, circular saw with carbide blade, or panel shear. V-groove routing allows clean 90-degree folds for fabricated pans and returns.
Are ACM panels suitable for Canadian outdoor use?
Yes - ACM is a standard exterior cladding and outdoor signage material engineered for weather exposure. The painted aluminum face resists fading and corrosion. For occupied building facades, confirm local building code requirements for cladding fire ratings before specifying.
What ACM colours does FIDAR System stock?
Eight face/back combinations, all 3mm on 4×8 ft sheets: White Matte/White Matte, White Matte/White Gloss, White Matte/Metallic Silver, White Matte/Pastel Green, White Matte/Brushed Silver, Black Matte/Black Gloss, Black Matte/Sea Blue, and Mirror Silver.
