Lightben Acoustic panel
A translucent acoustic panel: αw 0.40 and NRC 0.45 at 17 mm, with 78 percent light transmission.
Most sound absorbing panels are opaque fibre boards 50 mm thick. Lightben Acoustic is a 17 mm translucent panel that reaches a weighted absorption coefficient of 0.40, which Bencore puts alongside polyester fibre panels of 50 mm and up. It keeps the light and the view, and it weighs 3.9 kg per square metre.
The panel is a Lightben core, polycarbonate cylinders under acrylic, built so that sound enters the cells and is absorbed rather than reflected. It is the panel behind the acoustic version of the Split desk divider, and the one to specify for open plan offices, libraries and reading rooms where a glass screen would bounce sound straight back.

Why specify it
What Lightben Acoustic does well
Absorbs instead of reflecting
αw 0.40 and NRC 0.45 from a 17 mm panel, the range Bencore compares with 50 mm fibre absorbers.
Still translucent
78 percent light transmission head on, 53 percent at 60 degrees. The room stays bright.
Light to hang
3.9 kg/m², so it goes on cables, clamps and desk brackets without structure behind it.
Fire rated
Class B1 in Germany to DIN 4102-1 and Class 1 in Italy to UNI 9177; the 12 mm build is Bs2d0 in Europe.

Questions
Lightben Acoustic questions
How does a translucent panel absorb sound?
The core is open cylinders rather than a solid sheet, so sound enters the cells and loses energy inside them instead of bouncing off a hard face. Bencore measured it in a reverberation room at αw 0.40, with absorption rising through the voice range to a peak around 2 kHz.
Is NRC 0.45 good?
For a 17 mm panel that you can see through, yes. Bencore compares it with polyester fibre absorbers, which need 50 mm or more to do the same job and block the light entirely. It will not replace a thick absorber in a recording studio, but it will take the edge off an open plan office or a glassy lobby.
Can I use Lightben Acoustic as a desk divider?
That is the Split acoustic version: a Lightben Acoustic panel on clamp brackets that fix to the desk edge. See the Split page.
What sizes does it come in?
The standard panel is 3015 by 1250 mm at 17 mm. We cut and finish to size on order.
