PVC Sheets
About PVC Sheets
Rigid PVC foam sheets (also called PVC board, Foamex, or foam PVC) are a closed-cell thermoplastic product widely used in the Canadian signage and display industry as a lightweight alternative to solid plastic and wood-based panels. The closed-cell structure makes the material moisture-resistant, dimensionally stable, and suitable for a range of print, route, and assembly applications.
FIDAR System stocks PVC sheets in two colours - white and black - across a combined thickness range of 3mm to 24mm. White PVC in 6mm is the most commonly purchased product, used by sign shops across Ontario and across Canada as the standard flat-cut sign substrate.
Why PVC Instead of Acrylic or ACM?
PVC's primary advantages over acrylic are its lower density (~0.55 g/cm³ vs. 1.19 g/cm³ for acrylic), lower cost per sheet, and direct-print compatibility. For applications where optical clarity or laser engraving quality are not needed - flat-cut sign panels, exhibition walls, foam board replacements, wet-area panelling - PVC is the practical and cost-effective choice. ACM panels offer a more rigid, metal-face product at a similar price point but are more suitable for exterior cladding and signage with a premium appearance requirement.
Laser Cutting Note
PVC can be laser-cut, but the process produces chlorine gas (HCl), which is corrosive to laser optics and harmful if inhaled without adequate fume extraction. Many fabricators prefer to cut PVC with a CNC router (using an O-flute bit) or circular saw rather than a laser to avoid this issue. Acrylic is a safer and more laser-friendly substrate when laser processing is the primary fabrication method.
Thickness Selection
For most signage substrate applications, 6mm white PVC is the standard choice. Thinner 3mm PVC is used where weight and profile are critical. Thicker variants (10mm, 12mm, 18mm, 24mm) are specified for dimensional letter bodies, structural display components, and architectural panel applications where PVC's lightweight property is combined with a greater overall rigidity.
Applications & Use Cases
Flat-Cut Sign Panels
6mm white PVC is the standard substrate for flat-cut sign panels in Canadian sign shops - used for vinyl-applied directional signs, room identification signs, and interior corporate signage where a clean, lightweight, cost-effective substrate is required.
Exhibition Walls & Trade Show Displays
White PVC panels are used to build exhibition walls, display structures, and modular trade show booth components. The lightweight material reduces shipping costs and simplifies on-site assembly.
Architectural Model Making
Architecture firms and interior design studios use white PVC foam board for scale models, concept models, and presentation models - it cuts cleanly with a utility knife, router, or laser cutter.
Wet-Area Wall Panelling
The closed-cell waterproof structure of PVC makes it suitable for bathroom wall panels, shower surrounds, and wet-area cladding applications where wood-based products would absorb moisture and degrade.
