About PVC Sheets

Rigid PVC foam sheets (also called PVC board, Foamex, or foam PVC) are a closed-cell thermoplastic product widely used in the Canadian signage and display industry as a lightweight alternative to solid plastic and wood-based panels. The closed-cell structure makes the material moisture-resistant, dimensionally stable, and suitable for a range of print, route, and assembly applications.

FIDAR System stocks PVC sheets in two colours - white and black - across a combined thickness range of 3mm to 24mm. White PVC in 6mm is the most commonly purchased product, used by sign shops across Ontario and across Canada as the standard flat-cut sign substrate.

Why PVC Instead of Acrylic or ACM?

PVC's primary advantages over acrylic are its lower density (~0.55 g/cm³ vs. 1.19 g/cm³ for acrylic), lower cost per sheet, and direct-print compatibility. For applications where optical clarity or laser engraving quality are not needed - flat-cut sign panels, exhibition walls, foam board replacements, wet-area panelling - PVC is the practical and cost-effective choice. ACM panels offer a more rigid, metal-face product at a similar price point but are more suitable for exterior cladding and signage with a premium appearance requirement.

Laser Cutting Note

PVC can be laser-cut, but the process produces chlorine gas (HCl), which is corrosive to laser optics and harmful if inhaled without adequate fume extraction. Many fabricators prefer to cut PVC with a CNC router (using an O-flute bit) or circular saw rather than a laser to avoid this issue. Acrylic is a safer and more laser-friendly substrate when laser processing is the primary fabrication method.

Thickness Selection

For most signage substrate applications, 6mm white PVC is the standard choice. Thinner 3mm PVC is used where weight and profile are critical. Thicker variants (10mm, 12mm, 18mm, 24mm) are specified for dimensional letter bodies, structural display components, and architectural panel applications where PVC's lightweight property is combined with a greater overall rigidity.

Applications & Use Cases

Signage & Graphics

Flat-Cut Sign Panels

6mm white PVC is the standard substrate for flat-cut sign panels in Canadian sign shops - used for vinyl-applied directional signs, room identification signs, and interior corporate signage where a clean, lightweight, cost-effective substrate is required.

Events & Exhibitions

Exhibition Walls & Trade Show Displays

White PVC panels are used to build exhibition walls, display structures, and modular trade show booth components. The lightweight material reduces shipping costs and simplifies on-site assembly.

Architecture & Design

Architectural Model Making

Architecture firms and interior design studios use white PVC foam board for scale models, concept models, and presentation models - it cuts cleanly with a utility knife, router, or laser cutter.

Construction & Renovation

Wet-Area Wall Panelling

The closed-cell waterproof structure of PVC makes it suitable for bathroom wall panels, shower surrounds, and wet-area cladding applications where wood-based products would absorb moisture and degrade.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between white and black PVC foam sheets?

White and black PVC foam sheets are the same base material - closed-cell rigid PVC at the same density (~0.55 g/cm³). The difference is the colour: white PVC has a smooth white surface on both sides, while black PVC has a smooth matte black surface through-body (the entire cross-section is black, not a coating). White PVC is more common for signage and display; black PVC is used for dark-background sign panels, display backings, and applications where a matte black substrate is required without applying a separate black vinyl or paint layer.

What PVC sheet thicknesses does FIDAR System stock?

White PVC: 3mm, 6mm, 10mm, 12mm, 18mm, 24mm (all 4×8 ft). Black PVC: 3mm, 6mm, 10mm, 18mm (all 4×8 ft).

Can PVC foam sheets be used outdoors?

White PVC has moderate outdoor weathering resistance and is used in short-to-medium term outdoor signage applications. For extended outdoor exposure in direct Canadian sunlight, UV-protective laminate or ink systems are recommended to prevent surface degradation and yellowing.
