FIDAR System's black PVC sheets are a closed-cell rigid PVC product - lightweight, moisture-resistant, and easy to cut, route, and score. The smooth matte black surface is print-ready and accepts most adhesive films and vinyl wraps without priming.
PVC cuts easily with a sharp utility knife, circular saw, or CNC router. Do not laser cut it: PVC gives off hydrogen chloride gas under a laser, which is hazardous to breathe and corrodes the machine. For clean edges, use a carbide-tipped blade or O-flute router bit. PVC bonds well with contact cements and most acrylic adhesives.
Black PVC is used as a substrate for vinyl-applied signage where a black base is preferred - eliminating the need to apply a black base layer before the final graphic. Common in directional signs, corporate signage, and gallery label systems.
Black PVC foam panels are used in retail display fabrication for lightweight, matte-black display shelving, backing panels, and structural components. The lightweight (~0.55 g/cm³) nature makes display assembly practical and reduces shipping costs.
Trade show and exhibition builders use black PVC as back wall panels and structural display components where a dark, non-reflective surface is needed as a backdrop. The matte surface works well with vinyl graphics and direct-print applications.

How to Fabricate PVC Black Sheets
Measure & Mark
Measure the sheet and mark cut lines with a pencil or fine-tip marker. Black PVC shows light-coloured marks well - use a silver or white marker for clear visibility on the dark surface.
Score or Saw
For straight cuts on 3mm-6mm sheets, score deeply with a sharp utility knife and snap along the line. For 10mm-18mm sheets or curved cuts, use a circular saw with a fine-tooth blade or a CNC router with an O-flute upcut bit at high feed rate.
Route or CNC-Cut (Optional)
CNC routing produces the cleanest edges on black PVC. Use an O-flute or single-flute carbide bit. Keep feed rates high and RPM moderate to prevent material from melting at the cut edge. Ramp into cuts rather than plunging directly.
Clean Edges
Lightly sand cut edges with 120-grit sandpaper to remove burrs. The through-body black colour means edge colour matches the surface - no painting needed after cutting.
Bond or Assemble
For joining pieces, apply contact cement to both surfaces, allow to tack (60-90 seconds), then press firmly. For structural joints, consider two-part epoxy or PVC solvent adhesive (Weld-On 2007) for a stronger permanent bond.

Black PVC foam sheets are lightweight (~0.55 g/cm³), moisture-resistant, and cost-effective - making them the standard choice for signage substrates, display panels, and applications where weight and cost matter. Black acrylic is harder, heavier (1.19 g/cm³), produces excellent laser engraving results, and has a higher-quality surface finish - making it the choice for retail display risers, awards, and engraved plaques where appearance is the priority.
Black PVC foam sheets have a through-body black colour - the entire cross-section of the sheet is black, not just a surface coating. This means cut and routed edges also appear black, unlike some black-coated white PVC products where cut edges reveal a white interior.

No. PVC is a chlorinated plastic, and a laser turns it into hydrogen chloride gas, which is hazardous to breathe and corrodes the laser's optics and frame. MIT's environment, health and safety office warns that PVC produces hydrogen chloride gas, which it calls extremely dangerous. We never laser PVC, and our cut-to-size tool does not offer it. Score and snap thin sheets with a knife, and saw or CNC route the rest. For laser-cut or engraved black parts, use cast black acrylic.
Yes. We rip strips at the full 8 ft length on our panel saw, from the same stock on this page. Every cut loses the width of the blade, so a 48 inch sheet gives eleven 4 inch strips, not twelve. No. The black foam board sold for mounting and framing is a polystyrene foam core between paper facers, which is how 3A Composites describes its Fome-Cor board. Black PVC board is solid foamed PVC with no paper face, so it can be routed, screwed, painted and used in damp rooms. Foam board is lighter and made for mounting and short-lived displays; PVC board is the one to build with.
With care. Dark colours absorb sunlight, and foam PVC softens as it heats: Palram, which makes Palight foam PVC, says its board should not go above 60°C ambient or surface temperature and that dark colours are generally not recommended outdoors. If black has to go outside, keep it out of full sun where you can, fix it through oversized or slotted holes so it can expand, and leave clearance at the edges.

Contact cement (neoprene-based) works reliably for most black PVC bonding applications. For structural joints or bonding PVC to other substrates, methylene chloride-based plastic welder or two-part epoxy are also used. Solvent-based acrylic adhesives formulated for PVC (such as Weld-On 2007) provide a strong, clean bond. Surface preparation - clean, dry, lightly sanded - is essential for adhesion.
Black PVC foam is lighter and less expensive than ACM (aluminum composite material) panels and is easier to cut with basic shop tools. ACM panels have an aluminum skin that gives them a harder, more premium surface finish and better weather resistance for exterior signage. For interior substrates, display panels, and backlit-free signage, black PVC is the cost-effective standard. For exterior-grade flat signs with a metal appearance, ACM is the better choice.
Black PVC board is foamed rigid PVC with the colour running all the way through, so a sawn or routed edge comes out black rather than white. We hold it in four thicknesses on 4x8 ft sheets at our unit on Magnetic Drive in North York, sell it by the single sheet, and cut it on our own panel saw and CNC router.
A large share of the black PVC requests we answer are not for whole sheets at all. They are for strips: twenty pieces 3/4 inch wide and 8 feet long, twelve 4 inch rips out of one sheet, a run of 2 inch battens. So this section starts with what is on the rack, then does the strip arithmetic, because that is where a black PVC quote is usually won or lost.

If black has to go outside, keep it out of full sun where you can, fix it through holes at least 2.5 times the screw shank, and leave clearance at the edges: Palram's table has a 96 inch sheet growing about 0.36 inch over a 100°F swing.

Framing and art suppliers sell black foam board too, and it is a different material: polystyrene foam between paper facers, which is how 3A Composites describes its Fome-Cor board, made from 1/8 to 1/2 inch. It is very light and cuts by hand, built for mounting and short-lived displays. Black PVC board has no paper to peel or soak, so it can be routed, screwed, painted and used where it gets wet.

Sign shops call this material Sintra board, after the 3A Composites brand, or expanded PVC, foam PVC, PVC foam board or plain PVC board. Ours is that family: foamed rigid PVC, smooth matte black on both faces, in 4x8 ft sheets. 3A lists black among its standard Sintra colours, so when a drawing calls for black Sintra, this is the class of material it means, although it is not that brand.
Thickness is the decision that matters. 3mm is a backer, a sign face or a model sheet and scores with a knife. 6mm is the everyday flat cut panel. 10mm and 18mm are for routed letters, stand-off panels and anything that has to stay flat across a span or hold a screw. If you are choosing between black and white for the same job, our white PVC runs to 24mm and costs a little less per sheet at every shared thickness, and black acrylic is the harder, glossier option when the sign will be laser cut or engraved.
